Valentine’s Day Bird Feeders

Valentine's Day Bird Feeder

What a great idea! These little bird feeders are just adorable and most definitely a unique Valentine’s Day present. I found the idea on Wine And Glue, a really cute blog that has tons of recipes and craft ideas. Be sure to check it out!

Making these bird feeders are a simple craft for children to make and give to their classmates, friends, and family.

Here’s the recipe:

  • 3/4 a cup of flour
  • 1/2 a cup of water
  • 1 envelope unflavored gelatin (2.5 teaspoons)*
  • 3 tbsp corn syrup
  • 4 cups birdseed

Instructions:

Spray a spoon with cooking spray and then mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl, a la this

Next, spray the inside of your cookie cutter with cooking spray, and place it on a parchment lined baking sheet.  Fill it with the birdseed mixture.  Be sure to really pack it down.  In retrospect, I wish I would have sprayed another spoon with cooking spray and used the back of it to help pack it down.  It would have made for two smooth sides, instead of one.

Once you have your cookie cutter full, use something (we used a sturdy straw) to make a hole.  Then, holding down the birdseed, pull off the cookie cutter.  I had to respray the cookie cutter after every four and with a 2 1/2 inch cookie cutter, I made 12 feeders.  They are not so easy to do with kids because they’re a messy activity, and they are really fragile when you take off the cookie cutter.  But this would probably be perfect to do with an eight or ten-year-old.

Let them firm up overnight, and then they are ready to hang or give away.

Next morning the kids and I went outside and found the perfect tree to hang them from and then we secretly watched from a distance hoping to see some birds come and eat. Rex called out that it was dinner time – it was really cute!O:) He decided that this would be the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for his class. Well then, we better get a move on it and make some more!

What Valentine’s Day crafts have you and your kids made together? I would love to hear the story behind it!

A Little Bit About Me

I’m married to the love of my life, I have four amazing and precious children, three girls, and one boy. (He’s the baby of the family!)O:)
My husband and I work full time together practicing family law in Phoenix, Arizona and on this blog (I am just crazy about blogging- I’ve always loved living the writer’s life!)
We have two puppy dog children, Boo Boo, a German Shepherd/Lab mix, and Minnie, a Miniature Toy Poodle/Chihuahua mix (we just got her at 6 weeks so she’s our new baby of the family.)
I love elephants, snowmen, zigsaw puzzles, and the color pink and our family loves to travel and take out our boat regularly on the lake.
We simply can’t sit still.
Along with traveling extensively, we’ve moved nine times in sixteen years so we know a thing or two about moving with a somewhat large family, organizing, and decorating.
I started taking this blogging thing seriously just this last year although I’ve been blogging, building websites, and marketing since 2002. Holy cow! That’s a long time!O:)
We have several courses that we will be releasing soon as we decided to share some of this incredible knowledge we have been fortunate enough to come across- all without the stress and hassle we went through getting here.
Where’s here- We get to travel often all because of this blog and the best thing about it is- we can work from anywhere! O:) If we didn’t enjoy representing our clients so much I’m not sure where we’d be right now!O:) Read more here…
